To add to Virginia’s comment fertilizing is key. To get them to look like they do in the first place we fertilize every single time we water. This keeps plants green, full and flowering.
Soil composition, sun directionality, watering schedule, and how densely they planted (and replanted throughout the summer) will all affect looks. Hired gardeners will often replant and over stuff beds to give the look of dense plants, this will lead to root suffocation, but they will just replant again. The hired gardener will also have extra baskets in a green house, and swap out healthy ones for ones that don't look the best. Without knowing how the plants were kept, specifics are hard to come by. You may need to bring a basket or picture into the store.
