I have six weeks next summer to hike a portion of the trail. What would you suggest? And is the trail really busy? I love, love, love people but one of my goals is to step away.

Where you hike and when will determine how crowded the trail is. For example, if you hike Virginia in June, you will be in the bubble, but if you start Virginia in July, you will encounter fewer people but you will not be totally alone. By August, you may go days without seeing anyone. Likewise, if you start in Harper's Ferry in June, you will be ahead of the bubble. The best advice I can give is to decide when you want to start first, then pick where depending upon how much company you want.
