Smelt are small tiny fish about the size of the average thumb and they are silver in coloring and you just deep fry them in white cornmeal. They are very crunchy and delicious & have a flavor that is uniquely there's. I was raised eating smelts, my mother fried them up mostly on Friday nights. We love them. Haven't seen them in years.
Oh no, none at Winco. I really never heard of anybody eating Smelt. They are bred for much larger predatory fish as food. They spawn in fresh water lakes, and then go to the North Atlantic or North Pacific oceans to live their adult lives. They ate unique because they can live in fresh or salt water places !! Glad to help Sunshine.
