They can hook your car up to a diagnostic tool, which will produce a code, which they'll be able to look up on the computer and tell you what's going on with your car. Can they turn off a check engine light? The short answer is no, unless you just had a new battery installed and simply need to reset your car's sensors (check your owner's manual for how to do that).
