For the future, it is always a good idea to plan something like this a few days in advance in order to get permission from the place you'd like to do something like this at. The on-site Manager (if even at the store that day) sometimes has to get permission from someone higher up, and this can take time. I hope it went well! Good luck in the future!
Calling management is the 1st step. I would also think that they would want to know who the sale is for, typically a nonprofit organization. I would plan something weeks out, asking the morning of does not give much time to check for conflicts with other groups.
