All of these answers are incorrect. A SERVICE ANIMAL may accompany a person wherever they may go. There is NO license or certificate for a service animal. The only question any employee may ask is if that is a service animal and what specific tasks they assist with. That is it. They may not ask to see the tasks preformed or what the disability is. Now, Emotional Support Animals are completely different. They are meant to only provide emotional support when at home or when traveling. Emotional Support Animals are NOT allowed to follow you into stores or restaurants. Now with this all being said, it is next to impossible to prove which is which, so that is why so many get away with it at Walmart.
If the dog-any dog-is with the owner, on a leash and obviously trained and obeying, what is the problem ? They don't come in contact w/food and, as said-trained-which includes potty trained.
You are wrong as well, David. Service dogs MUST be trained and registered and they have carte blanche to enter any establishment without questioning. The ADA has regulated that. ESA dogs are also registered. I have one and needed a diagnosis to have her. I paid for her certificate and vest. MOST establishments will NOT turn down an ESA. I just returned from California where my ESA was allowed in restaurants, offices, banks, etc.
Animals are family. Family is to be included in whatever the destination and or task is. Stop complaining about other people and their actions. Not a single level headed person cares if a dog is in the grocery store. You all act as if you don't allow your dog to do anything other than being tied up outside or caged their entire life. If you do so, let the dog go to a family that will care to include them in whatever they are doing. This is supposed to be America, a land free of judgement and prejudice. Yet, here we are.
I've seen big dogs at Walmart snoozing at veggies and other food, there should look the health department in to... !!
Actaully by law if you tell a store its a ESA they can legally ask you to leave. You cannot ask an actual service dog to leave.
Suzanne, I'm afraid you've got yourself slightly off topic. No one is trying to put your dog down. Stay with us now.
Only certified animals are allowed to be anywhere. People lie.
It isn't acceptable for dogs to be in a grocery store but sadly employees can't really do much about it. Especially when people tell them there are emotional support dogs
Service dogs should be wearing a service vest.
I hate to bust your bubbles but I allow my 3 month old husky accompany me in walmart. Hell she's cleaner than 75 percent of the people in the store
Lol I always bring my dog into Walmart.
Actually, "certification" is a federal regulation. Look it up, while i too despise dogs in stores, I'd caution anyone who confronts someone with a dog. Colorado is 1 of many states that allow "companion" animals without certification, all that is required is a written note from a Dr. Which they're required to carry and be able to present, when challenged. Most don't follow these guidelines, and can start frivolous law suits over.
Lisa McGrew they do not need a vest by law
Goodness! I love animals with a passion, if I see 🙈🙉 all the dogs at Walmart what a joy for me 🥳🥳😁
So what ! Dogs should be welcomed!
I think this discussion 4 years old is childish and 4 years old let people be is it really a bother to anyone other than allergies. If so turn around we all live and breathe the same air ....love thy neighbor!!!
David is correct. A Service dog is different than an Emotional Support Dog. A service dog doesn't have to wear a vest and may go anywhere that the person needs to go. In fact, Service Dogs have more 'rights' than humans; which means, that a service dog can go places that a person cannot. A service dog can trespass private property in order to perform their service. There is no training, license, registration or certification. The Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice, Civil Rights division, enforces the American with Disabilities Act of 1990, Title II and Title III which details service animal laws. "entities may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry." AND entities "may ask two questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform"
Well probably because people don't give a f anymore. And as the legal to ask for service papers so why not I think it's stupid they're not going 2 stop.
Service Dogs com in many sizes and breads and as some have already said there is a registration form that has to be filled out and a number given for each dog that they will have for the rest of their lives. You can get all kinds of vest, harness, licenses badges, tags, etc. etc. But it all cost money that they may not have due to a fixed income . The only thing that they have to have is to be registered and be able to show it if asked like a copy on your phone just like your auto insurance. It is Federally protected and certain rights have been given for those who need a service dog or more than one depending on the skill of the dog. Also service dogs use to have to be trained by a professional and many still are for the special needs that takes a lot of training for the skill set, but you can also train your own dog or have someoneo else train them for you. If you have questions or concerns Google it then you'll know or servicedog.gov
Arizona dogs can't be left in hot car in summer.
David I do have to tell you that my mom has an ESA and she had to pay over $70 for a license and vest to be sent to her house and the license is given and administered by the ADA I would have to pay more for one for the dog I want to turn into my Service Animal because he is a large animal
