It depends on the make, model in addition to the oxygen setting. I presently have 1 that was fine when I was so sick with the flu I couldn't wake up - now it's driving me so crazy! I have now put the oxygen conserving device on the great big tank and put it at the bottom of my bed! I do have really good hearing since I can hear the analog clock in my upstairs bathroom click every second on any level - not with the air concentrator! I don't hear the 30yr old extra duty for solid wood garage door opener, or my grandpa honk -loud+long- I have described it before as future cause of heart attack! It wakes me and makes me jump high! It's so loud it's if my fridge, swamp cooler, micro, heater, laundry+dryer would be on all at the same time + the bubbling! Most places I have seen say it should be between a regular convo - ONLY a fridge! However there are many factors age+ltrs are huge! I'm calling to see if they want to find a quieter concentrator or bring the cans for around the clock use!

They produce a low hum, while purging oxygen periodically. Perhaps a "white noise" sound machine may help damper the noise, if the concentrator bothers you. But the concentrator noise is one you will become used to and can mentally block it out.
