The beach is part of a state park so if you have a Michigan State Park pass, everyone in your car is free to swim and be on the beach. It's Jump Island that costs money. There are lifeguards and everyone is required to wear a life vest that goes on the island. I watched my fiance & daughter play on Jump Island from the beach and while wading in the lake. Hope that helps.
If you want to watch them then no but if their gonna play for like 20 minutes or however long then yes you would have to pay
