Most people 'sneak up' on the dose they need. If you're just starting out, I'm going to assume you have one or more serious issues that you're trying to address. If so, and if you've never taken CBD, I'd start with no more than a quarter dropper and see how you feel. Then proceed incrementally from there.
You can take as much as around 1500mg a day. Either way, you can't OD on hemp or marijuana fam.
