Hi Nancy! I grew up w the Beach Haven location which i believe opened in 1952. To the best of my knowledge that is the first one
Hands has not been in Shipbottom since 2004. Was my favorite place to spend my chore money growing up! If my grandmom did not visit for more than a week, they used to put up "where are you Marie?" Signs in the window/door. Great people! I did some research, it was open about 50 years in SB, early to mid 1950's when it opened. It was run by 3 different generations
My cousin Manny Hand started the Hand store with his wife Shirley ( Schwartz) Hand. Her family started the ship bottom 5 &10. Manny later became president of the companies. Anyone who shopped at the Hand store knew Manny and loved him. He sold the company later in life and retired to Hollywood Fl.
It's a go to store if you need something in a hurry it's all right but the store is very expensive things are outrageously priced especially umbrellas patio furniture things that cost $400 are thousands of dollars it's better to shop on the mainland at your local Walmart or other stores like that it's only good to go to in a pinch if you're in a hurry and if it rains hard you can forget about it because the store will be surrounded by water and even if it's not raining and there's a high tide that's running higher than normal the store will be surrounded by water including the entire parking lot sometimes you might have to go there in bare feet and shorts there's a few other restaurants on the island that have the same problem and a few other stores too.
