It would not be over their head. There are some interactive sections that would be fun for them. There are no picnic tables, but there are several restaurants nearby.
I would say that it is a good place for grade schoolers if they are bright and into science. Even better if you call ahead and see about a personal tour. The staff are great and this place really is an outstanding museum with cool exhibits and history. I don't recall a picnic area and I don't believe there is a restautant in the museum.
RobotFest which is held yearly, just past, and Electronica are two events which may interest young kids. They sell a few things, like kits for assembly, but most of the stuff is pretty high level (radars, an Enigma, but Heathkit, generate power for a light bulb by hand crank, etc), so might depend on the kids too... (Age range given was under, no lower limit...) Making noise with circuits could be fun, i like the popcorn song from the 1970s and someone genned one up at one of the annual events (likely a RobotFest workshop)... R2D2 club, RC tanks, psper rockets at RobotFest, but most museum stuff is national defense sys. No food in the museum but some restaurants around, likely driving distance, leading around the airport. Events (RobotFest & Electronica) had concessions on site. Tailgate, and watch planes come in somewhere, there is a trail/bike loop around the airport, and i saw a bench, but not picnic table, could take some looking around to find, runways are lllloooonnnngggg...
I think that is a little young. It is more oriented to teens. If you had one younger that was particularly interested/precocious in electronics, then possibly it might be appropriate.
Honestly it will probably go over their head, but there are several interactive things in the museum that deal with lights or sounds so that might be appealing to them? No place to eat lunch, but there are several places to eat nearby.
A bit over their head. Middle school or high school ages are better.
There's a lot to look at, however I think this attraction would be over the head of most 5-7 year olds!
