Actually you can be either a beginner or a pro. Level is given by your own performance.
It varies with each obstacle, but it's pretty close to something like indoor rock climbing where upper body strength helps a lot, but you'll be using most of your body. There's usually an attendant to assist in how to attempt the different obstacles.
