Bid on the cars from the TOW lane
During income tax time the cars usually go for a lot as there are many people bidding but after March you can get a decent car for around $1500-$2500. If you go every auction you may get a car for under $1000 but not to often. I would say you need at least $1500. If you have $750 your best bet would be to look on Craigslist or a private seller in the newspaper.
