I would argue that they have strong cult traits as evidenced by 1. anyone who leaves is accused of being "in sin" and their name is smeared in the community 2. You have to have a very legitimate reason to leave and if you don't they will accuse you of abandonment 3. you know your pastors are abusive when they preach a whole sermon defending why they aren't abusive (sermon on June 20, 2021)
Yes Adam, it is. When people are in it they don’t see it, but I’ve never met a person who got out (which have been over 20 personally) and said it wasn’t if that tells you anything.
Really great question Adam, no it is not
I’d like to echo Stephen’s response, Adam. No it is not. As a member for over eight years I know dozens (literally) who have chosen to leave our church family and no one has been publicly smeared in the community, as one responder put. The churches job isn’t to validate everyone. If someone left our church family and is surprised that decision wasn’t met with overwhelming praise and validation, that sounds like a them issue. The churches job is to foster a community of believers who are able to work towards the missions of expanding Gods Kingdom on earth. As a member for eight years, I think Midtown does that really really well.
