It's not absolutely necessary but I would highly recommend it on weekends and such, some people without reservations were turned away when we went on a Friday evening.
If you go early, about 5, you might be okay. I recommend a reservation as it is very popular, great service and wonderful food!
I would recommend getting one. They seem to only make a limited number of reservations each night though. You can still go even without a reservation though. If you have a smaller party they can usually get you in pretty quickly.
