Basically, they test whether the child needs glasses, a hearing aid, etc. If your child has special needs they want to know in order to make sure that they can provide any help the child needs. I had a little boy I cared for that had no school for the year, but since I taught him he learned everything in two weeks scoring number one in the school. He's a genius; could take a TV apart at age five, test parts with a meter, and said, "Uncle T, I like women." And the girls like him, too!
I don't know about this particular school, but the public school system does not require Pre-K, as it is VPK (voluntary pre k). You might want to call the school directly and ask if entrance is dependent on testing.
Most of all schools require that you have a year of pre-K. That way they have the basics understood. A,B,C'S, Colors, How to count.
