My best advice is to go to the customer service desk and ask. This will give you a chance to see the entire store before making any purchases. You must be a member to purchase or buy most things in the warehouse. On the nice side, you do not have to be a member to use the liquor & pharmacy departments.
You can go with some member and explore/do shopping before reaching any decision.
If you know someone who has a membership, give them some money to buy you a gift certificate for there; than they will let you in to use.

No they do not. You can usually go in the exit if you want to just scope it out. Then you can buy stuff at food court for cash and also slip into the store through the register lanes but you won't be able to make a purchase without a membership card. Just FYI, Costco memberships are refundable if you find you're not happy with it.
