The chair folds up to create more room. You can get by it but you still have to be careful getting by it. It's not perfect but it really helps the one who needs it.
We had a chair rail installed last year. Our stairs are narrow, but it fits beautifully. Others are able to use the stairs also. They are a great company to talk to. Good luck!
