All emergency rooms work on a triage basis. Your child would be seen in order after the triage nurse does the initial exam. Your child would be seen by a doctor immediately if the symptoms are severe.

In my experience working in a hospital, when you're in triage they'll prioritize you based on the severity of the case. If the child isnt in medical danger, they're going to see the children who are, first. Hospitals don't employ an unlimited number of staff & unfortunately when using emergency services, there are times when you'll wait.

I will say it depends on how busy the ER is, and what the degree of illness is in the ER would be. One day triage a patient they're given a rating in the patients are then seen based on worst-case first.
