I didn't have to reserve a seat in advance when I went, but when I bought my ticket at the theater (10 minutes before showtime) I had to buy a ticket for a specific seat, which meant choosing my seat before seeing the theater. Be aware that (at least for the theaters upstairs) the balcony is quite close to the last row of the main area - I think the best seats are in the first row of the balcony.
You may have to if it's going to be a premiere or something but usually you don't have to. I prefer to reserve them online so I can pick where i want to sit.
