Same here. Don't know current rates but this year he came to replace battery cables on my car and we discovered there were several more issues that needed to be resolved and the additional charge was so small I felt I underpaid him for his time! He spent several hours vs the less than 30 minutes we thought it would take. He's very thorough and detailed. Great mechanic!
I dont know his current rates, however when i had him put on front brake pads that I had purchased myself, almost two years ago ,he only charged me 40 dollars.
