I've gotten them day of if there are rooms available. I would say at least the day before gives you the most selection, though.

is it good for kids
Is it scary for children, or is it just escaping? ( scary meaning: clowns, vampires, animations of any type, witches, animals, zombies ect.) Even cheap Halloween decorations scare the child I am asking about.
