I would not put your relative in this hospital !!! A relative of ours went to the emergency room for a self-evaluation and was admitted into the psych ward. We got word that he was in the emergency room and drove up from Virginia because we were the only next of kin available. As soon as we arrived we found out the visiting our times and visited him one day and left all of our vital information for the medical staff to contact us in case there was a change or any other decisions needed to be made . Call the next day to ensure everything was OK and was told he would not be discharged that day at all. Showed up that evening to visit with him and found that they had discharged him and put him out on the street homeless . No one on the staff called or even tried to get in contact with us to let us know his status until we showed up at the hospital and found he was discharged . This unit handled the situation very poorly !! Now my family member is walking the streets.

Hackensack has a great psych ward. I’ve had family stay there several times. Bergen Regional has a negative reputation based on people who have been there and how they were treated.

If your relatives has a drug dependence and serious depression. His needs would be met at carrier inpatient clinic which offers help for dual diagnosis. Look for a drug rehab that address dual diagnosis

Do not go to Bergen regional under any circumstances. They just medicate without any real therapy or counseling, you just walk the floors in a haze and watch tv all day with no real groups. Hackensack medical has a very good psych ward and treat u very well.

Hackensack 6 St John, the psych ward,is the last place I would have my loved one be admitted. The floor psychiatrist is condescending and disrespectful. The staff are unhappy working there, and their unhappiness is taken out on the difficult patients. They treat cognizant patients well but ignore and delay treatment for difficult patients. There is no counseling but group therapy sessions if it isnt cancelled at the last minute. Other scheduled activities get cancelled at the ladt minute too frequently. Only good thing abt the place is the social worker I met. Englewood psych is way more superior to hackensack and compared to Bergen Regional. Bergen Regional has poor facility but sincere staff to make up for it. I dont recommend the Bergen Regional outpatient day program though.

I would absolutely not subject anybody to this place. They essentially just babysit you and they're even horrible at that. Very unprofessional&underfunded. People had no pants when I was there because "patients kept taking the pants home so more aren't getting bought". I was there for a variety of reasons, severe PTSD being one of them. A patient was admitted&began blatantly stalking&harassing me including sexual threats and intimidation, he even tried to attack me and cornered me. All of this happened over the course of a week. Every single day. His room was even right next to mine, so I couldn't sleep&they wouldn't move my room or his, or even have a guard follow him despite his violent outbursts until THE LAST DAY. A couple of doctors/nurses even exacerbated the situation by telling him that I complained about his threats which made him have a violent outburst in the rec room and target me more. He harassed a few other women in the ward as well. Just don't.
