I have a 4 month toy poodle. He started coughing about midnight on and off He is coughing this morning on and off. It is like a hairball or something is caught in his throat. He is eating and drinking and pkaying.

Hi Deb. I would definitely call the hospital and have him seen. It could be nothing, but I would rather you be safe and have him checked out!

I agree with Jen Brown - especially with a puppy it can be many things some of them harmless others potentially not so harmless. Dogs typically don't get hairballs but they can irritate their trachea, get upper respiratory infections and catch kennel cough especially if they've been around other dogs and are not inoculated for it.
