Rifles are far easier to shoot accurately. Good way to build confidence in a new hobby, but you'll find yourself wanting to take longer shots in no time. Check out the Ruger 10/22, they're affordable & extremely customizable. If you want a pistol, don't be discouraged if you're not a great shot right away.. it's more challenging. Consider a few intro classes to learn the basics of safety & range etiquette. You can't go wrong with a glock 17 or 19.
Personally, I find rifles to be easier. AR-15 would probably be a good platform to start on
Start with a smaller caliber like .22 and work your way up.
Both are good for beginners. Handguns will usually be cheaper in terms of rental and ammo costs.
