Just a comment/question on some of these answers. Why would you not be able to walk out with the gun as a NJ resident? I think only if you buy online you have to ship to a local FFL. I know plenty of people who have purchased at cabelas and came back with the proper paperwork.

You can but there are some restrictions. The main restriction would be the gun has to be Jersey legal. Second restriction would be you would not be able to carry it back with you. You would have to have it shipped to an FFL in Jersey.
