Ft. Sumter was originally owned by the Union forces. The first sits of the civil war were fired here, after 34 hours the fort was taken. Ft. Sumter was held by the Confederate army for the rest of the war, despite at least one attempt to storm the fort and enough shelling to nearly demolish it.
