I had umbilical hernia surgery 11/20/2018. About a month or so ago I had some sharp pain in the area of surgery. Since then have had stools that look like black tar. Should I be cncerned?

Anything looking like tar should be checked out, especially if its way out of the ordinary... Don't wait... Could be blood in your stool

Any concerns you have always call the on call nurse it's better to be safe than sorry.

I have had sharp pains post surgery often and it's normal because its scar tissue but no to the other part. You should call your doctor.
