It depends on the type. You can prune most spring flowering shrubs that have finished flowering now

Hi Joni, No, it is not too late. Prune azaleas, rhododendron, and other spring bloomers now (it is best to prune them immediately after they bloom because if you prune them late in the year you may trim off some of next years flowers). In general, prune no later than August 1.
