Your second question: you can take the amtrak from nypenn directly to NLS, or you can take the New Haven Line from Grand Central, transfer at New Haven Union Station to the Shoreline East. Be careful, though- not all Shoreline trains go to New London. Some only go as far as old saybrook. Make sure to carry cash- if there is not enough time to buy tickets in New Haven Station between the transfer, you will need to pay cash onboard (no credit card machine on board).
