Since the campground is first come first serve, I was wondering what the odds are of getting a campsite on a Saturday in July? Would it be better to try to get one Friday?

The earlier the better. Most people there are there for the weekend and don't usually vacate on Saturday.

Yes you would be surprised how early it fills up, there are also those that come up on Thursday nights, so make sure to have a back up just in case.
