Not sure how it works with the walk up tour. My family of 4 went day after Thanksgiving. We arrive around 9:30. We were able to get in an walk through on our own.

You might want to check online. When I was in DC they were completely "sold out" for the day around 11am. You may be able to put a hold on tickets online before you go.
