How many steps do you climb to get up the Washington Monument [we did it in 1965]

Not sure about steps but was a elevator that was there but not working when i last visited the monument in 2016,

You can no longer can climb the steps but you can walk down.

898. I went down in 75. Interesting sign in step. 15 dollar fine for making a nuisance. .. I guess some people had a hard time holding it all the way to the bottom
