It depends on your needs. If you have injuries that requires physical therapy because you can get better over time they will get you started with that. But that doesn't mean that the Doctor won't prescribe medication as well. If your injuries or illness is long-term odds are they will start you on some type of pain relief.
They try physical therapy and other things first. Medication is prescribed if needed. They do test your urine to ensure you are not self medicating. I am a difficult case and get both physical therapy a few times a year and medications as needed. Everyone I have dealt with over the past 3 years has had my best interest in mind when determining both P.T. and meds.
