I believe most of the items on display are either part of the permanent collection on lone from other parts of the Smithsonian, other museums and some from private collections ....so I somehow doubt it pays for items loaned for display...maybe the loaning of an item could be considered a tax deduction ...why not ask the Smithsonian institute

They do not. The artifacts are on loan or donated.
