I called Intercontinental for you. You have to have a credit card to reserve the room. Otherwise, if you cancel last minute, they lose money, and there is a charge. You also need a credit card for incidental charges like phone calls if not free, room service, breakfast, charges to the room. Some places may take a debit for incidentals, but most require a credit card for everything. It secures things for them. I have stayed there, and the housekeeping and restaurant staff mostly speak Spanish, and very little English.
