Yes you can. I bought my ticket at the office and got there about 45 minutes early and then went and had lunch in town and then came back about 10 minutes before boarding
You can purchase in their gift shop or online as well.
Yes. Our diesel (non special events) have always had enough tickets available for walk up sales. Our online ticket sales are handy for the busier weekends (steam locomotive) and special events.
