There isn't any areas in the vicinity of the office however, there are a good number of dirt roads in the areas surrounding the refuge that will be nice (off 701 near PeeDee River bridge).

The island community is not part of the WNWR. That woupd be Sandy Island. The refuge is mostly flooded timber and marshland, and is generally inaccessible without a boat. It is however a beautiful place to tour in a kayak with abundant wildlife. I will warn you that until January 29th, duck hunting season is open and you will hear and see hunters in their boats. Be careful.
