I always call ahead, but an appointment is not required. The reason I wind up calling is because I've discovered that ordering tires Wal-Mart online is cheaper than buying the exact same tires off the rack at Wal-Mart. I know, I know, sounds crazy, but my last set of tires for my Silverado was $40 apiece cheaper! Takes a couple extra days, but your tires show up on a pallet with your name in it, the shipping/receiving dept calls, then I call the tire shop. Worth saving $160 to me...
Walmart does 👍. They love tire sales and can make in store credit if you need it. Their tireswear well on car.

No appointment necessary but you might benefit from one... Might get in/out quicker
