It was created because of its grand view of DC and was considered a potential site for moving the White House after the War of 1812 and for the Lincoln Memorial after the Civil War

One of the original purposes of the park (in addition to the obvious provision of a public space for recreation) was part of an attempt to move the Prime Meridian from Greenwich to Washington, DC. The park was meant to mark the meridian which would have run through the 13 cascading pools which also were meant to commemorate the original colonies. That is where it gets its name. It is also known as Malcolm X Park. The park is currently undergoing renovations to repair the leaky pipes and pools, to a handicapped accessible entrance to the lower level. Damaged sidewalks and paths are also being repaired and a new installation is being added to the upper level. The mezzanine of the upper level hosts a weekly drum circle on Sunday afternoons until 9 pm (weather permitting) which began in the 60s. The park is one of the busiest & most unique in the city. It is full of people running & exercising in the morning. It is very popular with dog owners. And known for picnics on the weekends.
