As Robert states, I recommend first applying for Medicaid. Some don't realize it's available for folks who need it. Second, call the Hearing Speech & Deaf Center to see if they have anything available for people who can't afford one. Many years ago I qualified for a grant and worked it through them, which allowed me to buy one for much less (think it was $100 and back in 1988 or so.)
