Is your dog a vest wearing real registered and trained service dog, or an "emotional support animal?"

Leila Fischer Bloomfield | Sep 28, 2019

I'm with Ben on this. Service animals registered and trained to do a task that the owner cannot do themselves are allowed and covered by ADA. ESA's(emotional support animal) or "companion" animals are not covered by the ADA(except for housing). They are often not trained as extensively as service animals and can actually cause a lot of problems, especially for food safety.

I dont know why they hassled you I was just there and there were two different non service non emotional support animals. Just roaming the store with teenagers. I love dogs we have two ourselves but the only dogs that belong in a grocery store or restaurant is a legitimate trained service animal. Not my belief but the federal government's law. So you folks that think you are being harrassed are dead wrong it is the stores right to make sure they are not in violation.

You have to have a real disability and a trained service dog, for starters.

Respect is earned, it's not a right. That being said, as long as it has its vest on, service dogs can go anywhere. Also, what does this pretentious question have to do with the actual store?

Sue Ealey | Sep 28, 2018

I am not an employee, however, I do agree with you. We need more respect for everyone in general. I wish I had a better answer. Your service dog is DOING a service everyone should respect the hours of training it had gone through to help you. I do apologize for others not respecting that fact Please remember not everyone hates service animals. They do deserve a lot of respect. Sorry I did not answer your question.

How were you disrespected?? Or do you act like everyone should know exactly how to treat you and service dog, some don't so be nice and tell them. So many people with service dogs are so mean about this, chill out. I feel bad for your dog living with someone that gets angry so easy. Chill out and see if you get more respect

So many bad answers. There is no national registration for service dogs--those online are just for profit joints selling something that has no legal standing. They do not have to wear a vest. The ADA defines a service animal as any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government. In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, staff may ask only two specific questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person's disability.

I like how everybody assumes this person didn't have an ADA service animal and had a faker. It's not your job to judge or assume.
