I went around the same time and the sign said that the trail was closed because of damage to the trail. It warned of possible fines, but i dont know how enforced it is. The east trailhead is not the greatest hike, but better than nothing.
The west trailhead was open on April 17 2021 as far as we could tell. There is a sign the trail has damage at the parking lot. There is a bridge washed out on the trail. There's a spot where people were wading through, that's what we did. There's also a trailhead on the East end. The forest service parking lot has a $4 parking fee.
