I think some questions and answers here are confusing this museum with the (much bigger) Museum of African American History and Culture on the Mall. You need to apply for a same-day pass for that museum (last I heard you could try to get one the same day by applying online at 6am in the morning). You don't for the smaller A.A.Civil War Museum, on Vermont Avenue in the U Street/Shaw area of DC.
Passes are really hard to get unless you plan way ahead. Even then they may be taken. However, they do try to make sure that all visitors get in the museum. If you arrive around opening time or earlier, you get in line and they'll start allowing people in with those that have passes.
I just went in November.I didnt need a pass.just walk in sign in.if you are a decendant of a civil war soldier just tell them.also leave a donation.they give lectures every 30 mins.also tgey will mail you your love ones certificate fir serving our country
