You can get your car inspected 2 months prior to expiration. Best to do is leave yourself enough time to schedule a repair in case it doesn't pass. If it does not pass right away it will be due to emissions. These repairs can be more costly if done under time restraints. Larger the window for mechanic to repair will be less costly, believe it or not.
Espinoza is right you can do it up to two months before the date on the window tag. You can also do it up to and after the date. you can however be ticketed if pulled over. But there is no fine for having your car inspected after the due date.
