LED light fixtures are the more efficient and come in a variety of types that can be used to replace the typical recessed "can light" fixtures. Many options are available at our local lighting supply companies and home centers. I used the retrofit recessed type LEDs with the integrated trim to replace my old 6" kitchen can lights. It was easy and it only took me a few minutes per fixture.

You can get pendant lights that screw into existing can lights. It's as easy as changing a light bulb! Depending on what bulb you use in the new light, it can be much more energy efficient as well as a nice upgrade.
