Clinton has the right answer.
It's best to go through a designated family member as nurses can't give out patient updates to non-approved family (HIPAA). Even then, if nurses get bombarded by multiple people asking for updates that are approved, it's time taken away from actual patient care (2-5 patients, each with family calling).
