The Carmel-By-The-Sea mission is named after St. Charles Borromeo.
Carlo Borromeo was the Archbishop of Milan, Italy...the mission was named to honor him. The first year the mission was in Monterey at the Spanish Presidio, but soldiers rape the Indian women. Father Serra moved the mission over by Rio Carmelo...the mission became "San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo". ( Saint Charles Borromeo of the Carmel River )
It gets its name from either Mt Carmel or a place in Judea called Carmel.
Father Junipero Serra and Padre Paluo started the Carmel Mission
