Homewood Suites is reasonable. If you are AAA member you get that discount too.
Try Airbnb! I stayed just 15 minutes from downtown at an Airbnb for $60 a night.
We stayed at Homewood Suites on the corner of Market and Reid this past weekend because we didn't want to rent a car but also wanted a less expensive place to stay. It's at the north end of the historic district and within walking distance of many landmarks. A bit of a hike to the Battery but doable if you're fit though there also are plenty of Bike Taxis bopping around.
There are a few but they are not cheap. I choose to stay outside hystoric downtown, at Sleep In Charleston-West Ashley on US 17 S, for around C$125/night. Clean, nice and 10-15min off downtown area.
Not too cheap in the city. A lot make you pay for parking too, ours was $20 a night
Not many. There used to be a days inn near the market area. It's nothing fancy but a reasonable rate.
