Sr 22 is to prove you have valid insurance

Judith Noguera | Sep 19, 2019

An SR-22 sometimes referred to as a certificate of insurance or a financial responsibility filing, is a vehicle liability insurance document required by most state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices for "high-risk" insurance policies. It is a form that you are obligated to get from you insurance company to reinstate your driving privileges when you have had an uninsured car accident or a conviction like a DUI, etc. DMV will request you to have that form along with your car insurance. RI DMV doesn't requires that form anymore, contact DMV before you do anything.

AN SR-22 is a form that assures your financial responsibility in the event of an accident. The Rhode Island DMV stopped requiring drivers to keep those on record with our agency in July 2018. See here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/adjudication/insurance/index.php Before traveling back to Rhode Island, you should contact the DMV in writing here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/feedback/ Explain your situation and include your driver's license number, DOB and address (including the last one in Rhode Island you may have had). An administrator will advise you on how to proceed.
